Last night saw the Launch of Poartry 2022, the latest iteration of the Poartry idea, curated and organised by Rick Sanders & Simon Meddings. On at General Office Gallery & Studios in Stourbridge until 30 October it showcases the 20 invited artists who were asked to produce a piece inspired by a Soundscape on the them of Hope. Originally a message box where people could leave their own thoughts and messages of Hope.
My interpretation needed me to look inwards for inspiration from the many many words of Hope the soundscape contained.
I took three elements: Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who surely must have been the complete embodiment of hope while she was imprisoned. The Swifts that always lift my spirits when they return each May for the Summer, and a simple Buddhist prayer that I came across several years ago. This prayer is so simple and so eloquent in its wishes for all beings in this world.
I created it digitally and used the negatives to print using the Cyanotype process. The central portrait, was toned using Yerba Mate Tea, which produces this wonderful tone.
